Once upon a time, I was in a video store with my then boyfriend trying to pick out a movie to watch. I picked up John Carpenter's Vampires, and proceeded to tell the boy about the coolest scene in the movie, where a guy uses his hot-from-being-fired gun to cauterize a wound he received. Said boyfriend looks at me, shakes his head, and says, "You're not like other girls, Betty."
Name::Braindead Betty From::Indy, Indiana, United States
My heart is breaking. I have one cousin in the Middle East now, in the midst of his 3rd tour of duty over there, and another cousin who's headed that way on a MEU the end of this month.
Have you heard that they're trying to make spanking your children illegal in California? I'm not trying to spark a huge pro vs. con spanking debate here, but no matter which side of that fence you're on, I don't know how any parent can stand for this. Abuse is already illegal; how much further do we want to let the government into our private lives?
Jay brought up what I thought was a good point when I was talking to him about this. He asked me, "If you can't spank your kids, can you build a cage with a bathroom to put them in when they need to be punished?" I told him that I thought that fell under the abuse category and he responded, "That's how adults are punished."
I wonder what a certain California legislator would say to that.
Forgive me. I know I said I don't do politics very often, and that's still true. Just with elections this week, and Rumsfeld's resignation, and so forth and so on, it's been a politically saturated week in America. I've got one more political post up my sleeve, so let me get it out of the way, and then I'm back to sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Whatever that means.
I'm so happy that for the first time ever, a woman is sitting in the second seat in the line of succession for President of the United States. Nancy Pelosi, newest speaker of the House, is now one of the most powerful female politicians this country has ever seen.
While I am, like I said, very happy, I'm also very worried. Ms. Pelosi, above all else, is a politician. The very attributes that make her such a good politician also make her a wonderful target as a woman. Her passion could easily be misconstrued by critics as "hysteria," her determination as "bitchiness," etc. I mean you needn't look any further than this post by one of my favorite bloggers, Certifiable Princess, to see that women are commonly seen as predatory "vipers" even by other women. Dubya has already started on the sexist bullying saying, "In my first act of bipartisan outreach since the election, I shared with her the names of some Republican interior decorators who can help her pick out the new drapes for her new offices," on Wednesday.
Ms. Pelosi's success has started a new chapter in American history. Hopefully she keeps the door open for younger women to start in politics and break up the country's greatest sausuge-fest.
Normally I avoid discussing politics on my blog. This is not to say that I'm not a political person. Really, I'm a raging liberal. But there are plenty of other people who do the political blogging thing, and enough of them are smarter than me that if I chose to blog about politics it would just be redundant.
Once in a while, though, something comes along that's so ridiculous, or awe-inspiring, or infuriating, that it can't go unremarked upon. Today, that thing is a radio commercial. The ad is being played on urban radio stations across the country, and it's transcript is a little something like this:
MAN #1: "If you make a little mistake with one of your 'hos,' you'll want to dispose of that problem tout suite, no questions asked."
MAN #2: "That's too cold. I don't snuff my own seed."
MAN #1: "Maybe you do have a reason to vote Republican."
OUCH! What a way to represent that black men are misogynistic pigs, and black women are "hos." I know there are always a few people out there who fit a stereotype, but come on. This is blatant racism. There's simply no other name for it.
The Republican Group responsible for this and other anti-abortion ads aimed at the black community, America's PAC, (funded by this scumbag) claims to have been responsible for swaying the 2004 elections with their anti-Kerry ad campaign.
I of course can't find mention of these ads in the big news sites (CNN, MSNBC, etc.) but I did find several sources of verification here, here, and here. I think the funniest verification I found was on a pro life website, who wanted to get the pro-life part of the message out, without propogating the racist part.
Sometimes, I really wish it was feasible to buy an island.
Of course, everyone's heard by now that Dick Cheney shot his hunting buddy. I have to say, the part that surprised me the most about this story was not that D.C. shot somebody, but that he has friends!
It's St. Valentine's Day. Why is it that outside of the Catholic community, this and St. Patrick's Day are the only Saints days to be celebrated? There's got to be some cooler saints to celebrate. What about Saint Irene day? Saint Irene was condemned to a bordello but remained unmolested despite being chained and naked. We could celebrate with bondage. "Spank me, it's St. Irene Day!" Wouldn't that be a cute button?
Yes, I joke about the "holiday" and firmly believe that it wouldn't be so popular if it wasn't such a cash cow, but I'll still get mad at Jay if he doesn't show some special gesture. Isn't that so hypocritical of me? Not that I really care. Here's the quandary: I have no idea what to get him. I had the luck of landing one of 3 males that are REALLY, REALLY good at gift giving. Ladies who complain about getting bad gifts: stop complaining. At least you know you're gift will always be better. It's so much stress buying for a good gift-giver. He asked for a computer game, but I don't know about that. Nothing says romance like software that'll make you ignore me for hours at a time.
Our little metropolitan is so exciting that the lead story on the news last night was that John Mellencamp is in the planning stages for a concert downtown. Oooo! In a way though, that makes me happy. At least the lead story isn't about a murder, or rape, or other horrible crime. Life may be boring in Indiana, but it's relatively safe too. The bad with the good, y'know?
Oh, by the way, for those who're curious... St. Irene's Day is March 30th.
